It is Children’s Picture Book Day! It is a day where everyone, young and old, can cherish what they love about children’s books and even share their personal favorites with loved ones. If you’ve been looking forward to this day since the last one, so have we! And we’re excited to share some fun ways you, your family, and your friends can get in on the fun.
Do it with Costumes!
One of the joys of children’s books is being able to dramatize them. And what better way to do that than with costumes! Pick out a favorite book your kids enjoy and make costumes to match the characters. Or make it a DIY project! For instance, if you want to read The Paperbag Princess by Robert Munsch, you can have your kids make costumes from unconventional household items to go along with the book.
Get Cooking
Another fun way to celebrate Children’s Picture Book Day is to get in the kitchen! Use meals found in a book as inspo for lunchtime and get creative. Say if you want to read Monster’s Lunch Box by Marc Brown, see if you can recreate monster-friendly meals, maybe think of a new one together for even more fun! Or start up breakfast in a fun way; try it with If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff, we’re sure those pancakes will taste extra yummy.
Happy Planting
It might be Children’s Picture Book Day, but it is also springtime, which means it’s the perfect time to get gardening. Take a trip to the local plant nursery (along with your book of choice), match up the plants with those in the book, and maybe even buy some for your home garden! A Season of Flowers by Michael Garland is a perfect reading companion for this fun activity.
Go Explore!
Select a museum and use your book of choice as a ‘tour guide’ for your exploration. Books like Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History by Vashti Harrison are a great choice to bring. Or using the same concept, go to the zoo. A book like Señorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer or Going to the Zoo by Tom Paxton can easily be your zoo map or info panel. It’s a fun way to get kids into history, art, animals, or just expand their realm of knowledge.
Get Learning
Another fun way to celebrate is reading books that help your kids grasp history. Do you know who invented crayons? We don’t either, but you can find the answer in The Crayon Man by Natascha Biebow. Or maybe you want to talk more about the environment with your kids, One Well The Story of Water on Earth by Rochelle Strauss can help you do that. And since it’s spring, you can read Abracadabra, It’s Spring! by Anne Sibley O’Brien and search for all the symbols of spring in your backyard! The learning possibilities are endless!
Get Cozy
The best way to celebrate today is….staying in! You don’t have to make a fuss about the holiday if you don’t want to and it’s perfectly fine. In fact, a simple and easy way to celebrate is to pick your favorite reading spot, get a warm drink and settle down with a good children’s book. Whether that’s on your bed, at your kid’s new desk, or sofa, celebrate Children’s Picture Book Day just by reading! Introduce the kids in your life to your favorite childhood picture book for a great bonding moment in a perfect spot!
