5 Ways to Create the Ultimate Guest Room Just in Time for the Holidays

by Ann Ferguson

The holidays are a time for families to come together and celebrate the end of the year. And most likely, some of that family will be staying with you — but is your guest room good to go?

Whether your loved ones are coming for a few days or a whole week, a guest room that attends to all their needs is a must! While you could probably get away with the old futon or a sofa sleeper, why not go the extra mile and give your guests the stay they won't see coming?

But if you're unsure where to start; that's OK — we have you covered! Check out these five ways to create the ultimate guest room, just in time for the holidays.

1. Setting Up the Bed

The most essential part of any guest room is — you guessed it — the bed! But it's not just about putting any old mattress on the frame. You want your guests to be comfortable, so consider getting a queen or king-size bed if you plan to host your parents or other couples. But if you plan to invite another family, consider getting two full-size beds or a big bed and a futon!

And don't forget about the temperature! Nothing is worse than trying to sleep in a freezing cold or hot, stuffy room, and guests usually won't risk waking someone up to mess with the thermostat. So, keep a stack of cozy folded blankets (both throw and bed-size), a small space heater, and a quiet fan! And don't forget about having enough pillows!

2. Bedside Essentials

Once you've sorted out the bed, it's time to focus on the bedside essentials. This includes a nightstand with everything they need, like a drawer for storage, a lamp, and a power strip to charge their smart devices!

You might also want to leave a few snacks and drinks in case they get hungry in the middle of the night. And if you're feeling extra generous, throw in a small box of chocolates or some flowers! You can also keep a notepad or card with the Wi-Fi password or alarm code.

Pro Tip: Leave a packet of earplugs or an inexpensive noise machine on the nightstand in case your guests are light sleepers!

3. Plenty of Storage

The next step is to provide plenty of storage for your guests. This means having dressers that hold everything they brought, without having to live out of their suitcase. This way, they will feel more welcome and less like an imposition. And if you have the space, you can also add a TV on top of the dresser, so your guests have their place to watch shows or movies.

As for extra storage, you can also add a bench with a hidden compartment by the foot of the bed. Not only can your guests use it, but you can also use it to store extra linens!

Pro Tip: Clear out some closet space and give them plenty of room to hang their nicer clothes and put away their bags and shoes.

4. Comfort Zone

Guest room with quiet, cozy corner

After you've taken care of the basics, it's time to add the finishing touches! This includes a cozy chair to relax, read a book, or just enjoy the view. You can get a regular accent chair or upgrade their comfort with a rocking or reclining chair, so they're extra comfy as they take a break from all the festivities. Don't forget to make the space feel homier with an extra throw blanket, pillows, or mini bookshelf full of books!

But if you're guest room isn't large enough to have a cozy nook, create a dedicated space somewhere else in your home and fill it with comfortable chairs, lamps, a desk, etc. That way, if you're in the middle of cooking Thanksgiving dinner and can't keep them entertained at the same time, your guests have a quiet place to get out of your hair and enjoy themselves.

Pro Tip: Add some plants to make your guest room feel even more homey!

5. Stock Up on Basics

Once you have all those essentials, don't forget to stock up on the basics! This means toiletries and anything else you can think of to make their stay easier.

  • Empty Hangers: provide various hangers like wooden blazer hangers, velvet hangers for delicates, and skirt and pant hangers.
  • Foldable Luggage Stand: get their luggage off the floor and in easy reach, and even offer more storage space for shoes.
  • Toiletries: stock up on travel-sized products like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and lotion. Don't forget other essentials like combs, razors, soap, and loofahs.
  • Shower Caddy: make their showers easier and more organized by providing a shower caddy with all their essentials, so they don't forget anything as they shower!
  • Towels: always have extra towels on hand in various sizes — you never know when they might need them!

You can also go a step further by arranging all the essentials in a basket for when they arrive!
